| Seaspan delays newbuildings
Seaspan Corp has revealed its decision to delay delivery of as many as 16 boxships from a number of Asian shipyards.
The New York-listed company will pay $19m to a variety of Asian shipyards for the right to delay deliveries of 11 of the 23 ships it has on order. It will pay between $1.3m and $1.8m per vessel in order to defer deliveries from two to 15 months.
The owner has 45 containerships in service and a further 23 on order after taking delivery of three vessels this year. Earlier this month, Seaspan took delivery of the 8,495 teu Cosco Japan, the first of eight ships it ordered in May 2007 at Hyundai Heavy Industries on the back of long-term charters to Cosco Container Lines (Coscon). It also received the 2,544 teu Guayaquil Bridge, the first of two ships ordered at Jiangsu Yangzijiang Shipbuilding for long-term charter to K Line and the 5,100 teu Hyundai built MOL Empire on charter to MOL.
A further seven in the 8,500 teu series are on charter to China Shipping Container Lines (CSCL), to whom Seaspan charters around half its fleet. Other vessels for delivery to Seaspan over the coming 30 months include two of 4,250 teu, five of 4,500 teu and eight of 13,100 teu. | | | |
| China Shipping Group Secure Huge Coal Contract
Mr. Li Shaode President of China Shipping Group Co., said that China Shipping has agreed to transport more than 40 million tons coal for Shenhua Group.
The first two months have already seen seven million tons of coal shipped and estimated 40 million tons for the whole year.
China Shipping Group (CSG) is the largest second shipping player in China, behind Cosco Group, however, CSG is the biggest player in the domestic market. Shenhua iGroup which is head quartered in Beijing has 54 coal mines with a total capacity of 200 million tons.
Much of China’s domestic shipping market focuses on transporting minerals from the coal-rich north to the power stations in the south. | | | |
| CSCL UPGRADE VESSEL TO BE 8500 TEUS CAPACITY FOR MIDDLE EAST SERVICE
China Shipping Container Lines decide to upgrade vessel to be 8500 teus capacity for their Middle East service called AMA service ( Asia Middle East Service), starting in the middle of April 2010, by deploying 2 vessel with start voyage i.e CSCL America V. 0051W eta PKL 14 April and CSCCL Africa V. 0065W eta PKL 21 April.
While the rest vessel remain unchanged at 5500 teus vessel capacity.
CSCL HQ assume that with this additional bigger vessel, it can solve space problem for both fm mainland China and South East Asia. | | |
